Sunday Savers – Save Summer Skin with Red Fruits

July 17th, 2011

My skin constantly feels like it’s on too tight during the summer. It feels dry…but it’s not. It feels burned…but it’s not. It sounds funny…but it’s not.

I found out a few days ago from a skin therapist at Boston’s The Spa at Mandarin Oriental that if you snack on red colored fruits and vegetables during the warmer months, you can help fight damage to your skin. They work over time because they’re bursting with anti-oxidants and protect against destructive free radicals. I always loved the term “free” radicals, cuz you definitely pay something.

Lycopene is the star antioxidant found in much of the red group. According to research, it may offer protection from the damaging rays of the sun. So think tomatoes (munch on them straight out of the garden since they release their lycopene when cooked), red peppers, guava, pink grapefruit, papaya, and watermelon (all lycopene-rich)…also cranberries, red bell peppers, red onions, and strawberries.
