Fab Friday – 10 New Ways to a Brighter Smile

February 18th, 2011

Saw a smiley photo of myself the other day. Not proud. When did my teeth get so damn yellow? I mean I’m not frightening, but they aren’t exactly winning any Best in Show (yes, that was a shout out to Monday’s dog show…yay Scottish Deerhound). I just got them whitened a few years ago, but my coffee habit seems to be upping the ante on my not-so-pearly whites.

I found a few amazingly simple every day things you can do to keep your teeth white (one of them involves eating cheese…twist my arm…I’ll do so much of that, my teeth will be so white, they’ll be clear).

Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans and Dr. Emanuel Layliev, partners at the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, and the dynamic duo who caters to the smiles of Kim Catrall, Hugh Jackman, Tom Brady and Bridget Moynahan, weigh in on these fresh new ways to brighten up your smile in a snap:

PASS THE CHEESE: Calcium found in cheese creates a film over teeth and protects them from the acid in wine that can stain them.

REEL IN A HEALTHY SMILE: Recent studies show that two servings of fish every week help prevent against gum disease, opt for fish that are rich in omega-3s, such as salmon or tuna.

KISS AWAY: Surprise, kissing is good for your teeth! Locking lips helps maintain a healthy smile by increasing saliva production. Saliva acts as a natural lubricant, slipping under plaque and washing it away.

CHOCOLATE MAY KEEP THE DOC AWAY: While chocolate does contain sugar, it also contains good-for-you ingredients that help prevent tooth decay.  In fact, the cocoa bean husk has an anti-bacterial effect on the mouth and can fight effectively against plaque and other damaging agents.

ADD SLICK OF COLOR: A blue-based red lip gloss will make smile appear whiter and brighter.

DAZZLE ON: A simple pair of sparkly earrings can make teeth appear whiter.  And avoid gold jewelry, which tends to exaggerate yellowish tones.

BITE INTO AN APPLE: Munching on crunchy snacks like apples or celery is as effective as brushing. Raw fruits and veggies are loaded with fiber, a natural abrasive that can help clean teeth.

SIP THROUGH A STRAW: Coffee, red wines and dark sodas are main causes of yellowing, so sip your latte or soda through a straw.

FLOSS DAILY: Don’t expect wow whitening results without flossing. Teeth with plaque are more prone to stains because substances like wine and coffee stick to the buildup.  Another reason to floss: Neglecting to clean between teeth is one way to develop gum inflammation, which can increase your risk for heart disease.
