I switched out my kid’s clothes yesterday. Out with the cool and in with the warm. I have yet to do the same with my own, but I’m holding off for a bit. One reason is that I don’t have the 14 hours it’s going to take me. Rumor has it…I have a few items in my clothes closet. Secondly, I’m happily transitioning a bunch of clothes into fall.
One such item is shorts. That’s right. We’ve been given the go-ahead to wear them with tights. I’m so in love with this trend, I can’t even express to you. It’s the easiest trend to wear and one of the most flattering.
But you can’t just throw on shorts with tights and escape an ‘80s fiasco. There are rules. And I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t tell you them.
Stay away from lighter fabrics. Think heavier weight fabric such as denim or wool. Also keep color in mind. Pink is pretty…in the spring. Try for dark browns, blacks, dark grays and blues.
Choose opaque tights in darker colors like chocolate brown and black. If you want to throw a curl ball, try a textured tight. Just be cautious of mid-thigh changes in texture (either for support or control). Tacky.
Wear them with flats, high-heeled booties, high-heeled clogs or knee-high boots.
It sounds weird, but when you’re wearing booties or clogs with an open heel, wear socks over the tights. Keep it mono chromatic for more modern fashion, less school girl.
Layer on floaty tops (if the shorts are fitted), vests or cardigans to bring a little actual warmth as well as a fall feel.
Pair them with a boyfriend blazer or a military jacket for a modern edge.
I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to this ridiculously versatile Calvin Klein romper yet, so I paired it with black tights, black high-heeled booties with zipper details, chain belt, and military jacket.
And if you’ll excuse the crappy Photoshop job (my right leg looks like it has a goiter) and the variety of toys in the background, here’s another romper I recently took out on the town during a crisp fall night (it’s not autumn yet, but it was 50 degrees out, so we’re close). Michael Michael Kors romper with cardi, tights, wide belt and Steve Madden booties.
What do you think of the short-tights trend? Will you wear it?
